А. Лебедева посвящена исследованию роли пустыни в жизни Египта периода Древнего царства (III тыс. до н. э.), а также вклада ныне пустынных областей в становление, развитие и кризис первого территориального государства в истории человечества. В работе рассматриваются этапы изучения современных пустынь Египта и Судана, геология окружающих Нильскую долину территорий, древние ландшафты и климат. Традиционно привлекаемые специалистами письменные и изобразительные источники вводятся в контекст известных археологических памятников. Обсуждаются практика и условия организации царских экспедиций за пределы Нильской долины, а также влияние богатств пустыни на экономику, политику и социальное развитие древнеегипетского общества.
Монография ориентирована на специалистов и студентов гуманитарных направлений, а также на широкий круг читателей, интересующихся историей, археологией, культурой и экономикой государств древности.
