В этих и во многих других вопросах автор этой книги пытается разобраться. Для этого он анализирует мифологические представления народов Евразии, Африки и обеих Америк. О них известно из тысяч повествований, записанных этнографами и лингвистами либо извлеченных из древних текстов. Сходство и различия в представлениях о луне и звездах позволяют реконструировать исторические процессы – от относительно недавних до происходивших 10–15 тысяч лет назад и более.
То есть эта книга – не путеводитель по ночному небу, а рассказ о том, что случилось в далеком прошлом. Такое исследование было бы невозможно без современных компьютерных технологий: они сделали доступной информацию, которую полвека назад автор вряд ли смог бы собрать. Но еще важнее – успехи археологии и генетики. За последние годы наши знания о прошлом человечества неизмеримо расширились; именно благодаря этому мы начинаем понимать те послания предков, что зашифрованы в мифах.
